New! This week we release a three-part series of video interviews featuring CBV perspectives on the valuation of intangible assets. It will be promoted online on LinkedIn, YouTube and the Google Display Network. Hosted by Shawn Kunungo, globally renowned innovation strategist, CBVs share a revealing view of the complexities of intangible assets from their respective areas of practice in financial reporting, litigation and private equity. Our special thanks to CBVs Tiki Cheung, Chris Polson, and Kevin Hutchinson.

For a start, we’re looking for CBVs to participate in the opportunities below. We will provide more information about these in the coming months and communicate new opportunities as they arise, including ways for Students to get involved.

BOARD OF EXAMINERS - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

CBV Institute is seeking Members who wish to sit on the 2022 Board of Examiners. The mandate of the Board of Examiners is to approve the MQE and inform the Board of Directors of the Candidates who have obtained a passing mark on the MQE. Specifically, the Board of Examiners will:

  • Oversee the overall quality of the MQE development, evaluation, and marking process,
  • Review and approve the final results of the MQE,
  • Report annually on the overall MQE process and results,
  • Recommend improvements to the MQE development or evaluation processes, and
  • Assist in the development of test bank question(s)

Did you know CBV Institute provides CBVs and Students free access to many business valuation books, articles, and resources? For example, BVR’s Cost of Capital Professional has now been updated with 2021 year end data (equity risk premia, CRSP decile size premia, and industry betas/IRPs)!

Our BVR portal provides free access to BVR's most complete knowledge library, providing business valuation research, news, books as well as Cost of Capital Professional, an online platform to compute cost of equity and WACC estimates. CBV JUDGES NEEDED – CASE COMPETITION

We are excited to see university events gearing up again! In keeping with our continued effort to promote brand awareness within universities, we are seeking 2 CBVs to sit as judges for a case competition at the first annual Ryerson Financial Planning Conference. The case competition, taking place February 22-24 over Zoom, will be based on a personal finance question. Total time commitment is 4.5 hours - 1 hour (12-1 PM ET) on February 23rd, and 3.5 hours (1:30 – 5 PM ET) on February 24th.

WINTER 2022 COURSE EXAMS & PRACTICE QUIZZES

Students must create a profile and schedule their course exams with Examity by Monday, February 28th. This can be done by logging into moodle. Students must write their exams using Examity (no exceptions).

Further, Students are encouraged to register for and take a Practice Quiz on Examity. The purpose of the practice quiz is to give Students the opportunity to experience the Examity environment, including connecting to an online proctor and uploading a response file; and to familiarize Students with the Institute’s examination rules. Deadline to complete the practice quiz is February 28th. Please note that Students must schedule the practice quiz at least 24 hours in advance of this deadline.

Answers to the Practice Quiz will be available on Moodle on Tuesday, March 1. For more information on the Practice Quiz, log into Moodle, click on “My Courses”, click on the “CICBV Practice Quiz (Winter 2022)” and go to the document “Examity Practice Quiz – Instructions”.


REGIONAL DIRECTOR ELECTION

In our ongoing commitment to professional excellence, the Institute’s Leadership has adopted a proactive approach to recruit candidates to serve on our Board of Directors (Board). Every seat on our Board plays an important role in supporting us to meet our critical strategic goals for our future. We want to alert you now that we will be holding an election in early 2022 for the following Regions:

  1. the Province of British Columbia and the Territory of Yukon (“British Columbia”),
  2. the Provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and the Territories of Nunavut and Northwest Territories (“Prairies”),
  3. the City of Toronto, and
  4. the Provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island (“Atlantic”)

Role of CBVs in Indigenous Litigation
Indigenous reconciliation is an important and evolving area in law and understanding where CBVs can provide value within the context of Indigenous litigation and disputes is critical. Join Timothy Zimmerman, Stephen Lee, and Josh Morrison as they provide an introduction to the Indigenous litigation space, review a brief history of landmark decisions and discuss potential future developments. The presentation will focus on damage quantification in Specific Claims cases, reviewing a number of past and recent legal decisions that have created unique differences in assessing equitable compensation in Specific Claims and economic damages/business losses arising from commercial disputes.

M&A Update (BC Workshop Dinner)
Join Grant Wallace, Managing Director, CIBC Mid-Market Investment Banking, as he takes participants through an M&A market update focused on private company transactions in Canada.  2021 was a bounce-back year for M&A deals – Grant will review current trends in deal pricing, leverage multiples, transaction processes and the dynamic between buyers and sellers, as well as talk through the outlook for 2022.
