INSTITUTE ADOPTION OF IVSLast week, CBV Institute was pleased to announce the landmark decision of its Board of Directors to adopt International Valuation Standards (IVS) as an optional framework for business valuation practice. The decision to adopt IVS (which are developed and issued by the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC)) as part of the Institute’s suite of acceptable practice standards for valuation, comes after a multi-year stakeholder consultation process. Starting immediately, CBVs have the option of using either IVS or CBV Institute’s existing valuation Practice Standards for valuation engagements (Standards 110, 120, and 130), thereby elevating the global reach of the CBV profession and solidifying CBV Institute’s commitment to a strong global valuation profession by making IVS acceptable for use in Canada. For any questions CBVs or Registered Students, we’ve prepared an FAQ document that is available at the link below. |

OUR PATH FORWARD – 2023 SURVEYStarting in 2021, the Institute has annually conducted a comprehensive and anonymous Member and Student survey to better understand CBV's and Registered Students’ thoughts on various matters which will impact CBV Institute’s future direction. The important and thoughtful feedback and comments received via the surveys have informed the development of the Institute’s 2022-2025 Strategic Plan and the work we do.
This important survey will close on Friday, November 17th. The results of the survey (amalgamated and anonymous) will be shared with CBVs and Registered Students in early 2024. CLICK HERE to access the survey, if you have not already completed it. For questions, please contact info@cbvinstitute.com. |

PRACTICE CORNER: SIGNIFICANT SCOPE LIMITATIONSAt what point is a scope limitation so significant that a valuator should simply not provide a conclusion? And what should a valuator do if their client, or their legal advisors, insist on the provision of “a number, however rough”? Practitioners must exercise professional judgment when determining whether to proceed with an engagement where significant scope limitations exist. CBV Institute’s 2022 Practice Inspection Summary Report tackles some of the considerations for valuators who are faced with scope limitations. |

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: AI & TECH WORKING GROUPCBV Institute is creating a small working group to explore AI and technology. We’ve seen explosive growth in AI tools this year, as well as the recent emergence of tools which aim to automate aspects of the business valuation process. These tools pose opportunities as well as potential risks. The objective of this working group is to gather insights from the CBV community about the variety of AI and automation tools available today that could impact the business valuation profession, and to help inform the Institute’s response and approach. Impacted areas of CBV Institute will include Education, Standards and Ethics. |
