UPDATES TO CBVINSTITUTE.COM

As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure CBVInstitute.com remains relevant and timely for Members, Students, and the general public, we are pleased to inform our network of the following updates:

These updates will provide website visitors with refreshed visual content, more relevant information, and a more engaging experience.

ED&I SURVEY REMINDER

If you haven’t already done so, please take two minutes to complete this voluntary, four-question Equity, Diversity & Inclusion survey.

By way of reminder, the questions in this survey are intended to help CBV Institute more effectively support our members by better understanding the diversity that enriches the CBV profession. Answers to these questions will help CBV Institute monitor and respond to ED&I-related trends and issues, and to report on progress towards ED&I-related goals.

The survey will be conducted by Environics Research, an independent research firm CBV Institute has commissioned to conduct the research on our behalf. All information will be kept strictly confidential and results will be viewed in aggregate, so that individual responses are not identified. Neither CBV Institute nor Environics Research will disclose, disseminate, or provide access to survey data and identifiers.

Your response by January 20, 2023 will be very much appreciated.

To commence the survey, please click here.

UPCOMING EVENT: PRACTICAL ISSUES IN FAMILY LAW

We are excited to announce an upcoming event co-hosted by CBV Institute and the Family Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario (FDRIO), taking place on February 13, 2023. The event will provide valuable insights and guidance for chartered business valuators. It will feature three sessions, covering the cross-examination of a CBV in family law, valuing RSUs and stock options, and the expanding and evolving role of CBVs in alternate dispute resolution.

This is a fantastic opportunity to stay current on important issues, learn from industry experts, and network with colleagues. We hope to see you there!

This event is available IN PERSON and over LIVESTREAM.

TORONTO WORKSHOP - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Workshops are collaborative venues for CBV professional development at the local level. Workshops advance professional topics of local interest and provide the opportunity for CBVs to receive technical guidance close to home. Workshops qualify to earn CPD hours from CBV Institute. Organizers also promote regional networking activities and social events, supporting a sense of community that connects the CBV profession.

Facilitated by CBV Institute, workshops are spearheaded by dedicated volunteers. Regional organizing committees are mobilized by CBVs to plan and deliver events, which are open to all CBVs and Students in the local area.

If you are interested in volunteering for the Toronto Workshop Committee, please send an email to deborah.hanlon@cbvinstitute.com by February 15, 2023.

CBV EXPERTISE SOUGHT BY ASC

CBV Institute’s expertise was recently sought by the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) on the topic of valuation for financial reporting. We were pleased to engage the expertise of three CBVs in valuation and litigation support to discuss analysis performed by management, auditors, and/or experts (typically a CBV) to support fair value conclusions and disclosures in financial statements.

CBV speakers included three experts from MNP's Valuations and Litigation Support team: Brittany Dela Rosa, CPA, CA, CBV, Partner, Calgary; Quinn McDermid, MBA, CFA, CBV, Partner, Toronto; and Victor Wong, CPA, CMA, CBV, Partner, Vancouver.

CBV Institute recognizes the importance of having our expertise acknowledged by the ASC and looks forward to receiving additional invitations to provide valuable insights to securities and financial regulators, and the industry at large.

EXPOSURE DRAFT RELEASED: ADOPTION OF IVS AS OPTIONAL USE PRACTICE STANDARDS

CBV Institute has released an exposure draft proposing the adoption and permitted (optional) use of the International Valuation Standards (IVS) as issued by the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC) for independent valuation engagements which would otherwise be performed in accordance with CBV Institute Practice Standards Nos. 100, 110, 120 and 130. For clarity, IVS would be adopted as an option alongside, rather than replacing, Practice Standards Nos. 100, 110, 120 and 130.

CBV Institute and its Professional Practice and Standards Committee (PPSC) have been discussing the adoption of IVS for several years. The publication of this Exposure Draft is a significant step forward towards global harmonization of valuation standards for the benefit of the public interest. CBV Institute and CBVs have had a leading role in shaping IVS into what they are today – the leading internationally recognized standards for valuations of all asset types, including business valuation.
