REGIONAL DIRECTOR ELECTION

In our ongoing commitment to professional excellence, the Institute's Leadership has adopted a proactive approach to recruit candidates to serve on our Board of Directors (Board). Every seat on our Board plays an important role in supporting us to meet our critical strategic goals for the future. We want to inform you that an election is scheduled to take place in early 2025 for: 

  • the Provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island collectively (Atlantic Canada)
  • the Province of British Columbia and the Territory of Yukon collectively (BC)
  • the Provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and the Territories of Nunavut and Northwest Territories collectively (Prairies)
  • the City of Toronto

All Members whose principal place of business is in these specified Regions were sent a Notice of Election on January 6, 2025, which included a link to the Regional Director Position Profile. If you would like the email resent, please contact Deborah.hanlon@cbvinstitute.com


EXPOSURE DRAFT RELEASED 

CBV Institute welcomes comments on the exposure Draft concerning proposed revisions to the practice standards for independent valuations (Practice Standards Nos. 100, 110, 120 and 130).

The proposed changes in this exposure Draft impact all valuation conclusions and reports in several ways.

DID YOU KNOW? NEW IFRS 18

Presentation of Financial Statements is changing. New IFRS 18 will redesign the Income Statement and create more comparability

Users of financial statements received some good news in 2024! In response to investors’ demand for improved information about companies’ financial performance, the IASB published IFRS 18 in April 2024. The new IFRS 18, set to replace IAS 1, is expected to enhance comparability, and is meant to be more useful to users in assessing the prospects for future net cash inflows to the company, hopefully providing better access to capital.

Expropriation – What’s it all About?
Expropriation – you may have heard the term, but do you know what it means and how a CBV can assist in expropriation matters? Join Paula Frederick, FCBV, Principal, Cohen Hamilton Steger & Co. Inc., Heather Jones, Partner, Gowling WLG Vancouver, and, Mila Badran, Partner, Gowling WLG Montreal as they take participants through the expropriation process and the differing expropriation laws across Canada. The various types of claims will be explained, and the roles of a CBV, other experts, and Counsel in quantifying the claimant’s compensation will be examined. Practical aspects will also be discussed in terms of how a CBV can assist during each step of the expropriation process. Lastly, current issues in the quantification of a claimant’s compensation will be explored.
