What CBVs Are Trusted to Do
CBVs (Chartered Business Valuators) are accredited financial professionals with deep expertise in measuring, creating, and protecting business value. Their training goes beyond accounting or tax. CBVs provide the strategic insight needed when the stakes are high.
They are trusted to:
- Advise on deals and transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and valuations for investments.
- Support litigation and legal matters, with credible, valuation-based financial evidence.
- Guide succession and estate planning, ensuring smooth transitions and long-term clarity.
- Build models and assess risk, uncovering insights that shape business strategy.
CBVs help decision-makers understand the full picture, including assets you can’t see on a balance sheet. They identify value drivers, assess risk, and offer clear, defensible conclusions that support confident action in a complex business world.
How to Become a CBV
University Degree
To become a CBV, you’ll need a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution. While a background in finance or business helps, it’s not required - curiosity, critical thinking, and strong communication matter just as much.
Completion of the CBV Program of Studies
Build deep, practical valuation expertise through four core courses and two electives, all online and designed to fit your schedule. Courses are offered year-round, and exams can be written from anywhere in English or French.
Membership Qualification Exam (MQE)
The MQE is the final step before becoming a CBV. It’s a case-based, four-hour exam that tests your ability to apply valuation skills in real-world scenarios. Offered once a year, the MQE can be written online, in English or French, from anywhere in the world.
Business Valuation Experience
To become a CBV, a minimum of 1,500 hours of business valuation or related experience is required. It is not required that experience be completed under the supervision of a designated CBV.
CBV Membership Application
Membership application is submitted once all requirements have been satisfied. Only those determined to be of good character and reputation are admitted to membership.
