FINANCE, FINANCIAL REPORTING & VALUATIONS

THE OPPORTUNITY
You will play a key role in the valuation of over 300 private investments in Private Equity, Infrastructure & Renewable Resources, Absolute Return Strategy, and Private Credit. Both the Senior Manager and Manager roles involve overseeing the valuation work performed by the valuations team, providing quality assurance on valuation reviews, and acting as a subject matter expert. You will work with the Asset Classes to manage the year-end and quarterly investment valuation processes and provide input on valuation policies and directives for both liquid and illiquid investments.
WHAT YOU BRING:
- At least ten years (or five, for the manager level) of experience in a finance or accounting function, including a minimum of six years (three for the manager level) valuing private equity, private debt, and infrastructure investments
- A professional accounting designation (CPA, CA; CPA, CGA; CPA, CMA or equivalent)
- CFA or CBV, or pursuing CFA or CBV, is an asset
- Strong knowledge of valuation principles for private investments, and experience in the application of various valuation approaches for equity and debt investments
- Previous experience coaching, training, and developing team members
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to manage priorities and deadlines of multiple competing tasks within a team environment
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Ability to incorporate opinions of others and achieve consensus
- Experience interacting with external advisors, senior management, and other stakeholders
WHAT YOU GET TO DO (SENIOR MANAGER):
- Lead the year-end and quarterly valuation processes for private investments, co-ordinating with investment teams, external managers, and external advisors to ensure completion of the process within tight timelines
- Assist in the management of external valuators including selection, relationship management, and monitoring and reporting on their work
- Oversee the valuation work performed by the valuation and investment accounting teams including managing workload, training, and quality assurance on valuation reviews
- Review fair value valuations prepared by investment teams and/or external valuators and internal valuations for select investments, including the preparation of schedules and memorandums to support the recommended value prepared by the valuations team
- Work with senior management in Finance, the Asset Classes, and the Valuation Committee to resolve valuation issues on specific investments (as required) and prepare memorandums to support Finance’s recommendation on fair value
- Drive continuous improvement in valuation processes, timelines, and reporting, by identifying potential efficiencies and areas of automation, recommending changes, and working with the Finance Operations team to implement changes
- Develop and manage efficient processes for valuation reporting, as well as gathering valuation information for presentation and disclosure in the pooled fund financial statements
- Act as a subject matter expert for private market valuations within BCI and respond to information requests and inquiries from internal and external auditors
- Prepare executive summaries and other analysis for the Executive Management Team, Valuation Committee, and Audit Committee
- Research valuation best practices, including maintaining a strong peer network. Stay up to date on valuation best practices and make recommendations for changes to BCI’s valuation policies, directives, and procedures as applicable
- Maintain proper controls for illiquid valuation processes and oversee the development of process documents
WHAT YOU GET TO DO (MANAGER):
- Manage the year-end and quarterly valuation processes for private investments, co-ordinating with investment teams, external managers, and external advisors to ensure completion of the process within tight timelines
- Review and analyze valuations prepared by external advisors and external managers, concluding on the reasonability of the valuations
- Prepare internal valuations for select investments, including the preparation of schedules and memorandums to support the recommended value
- Manage differences of opinion with both internal and external stakeholders, influencing outcomes to achieve consensus and escalating issues when required
- Oversee the work performed by the valuations team including managing workload, training, and quality assurance on valuation reviews
- Prepare executive summaries and present quarterly valuation results to the Valuation Committee
- Drive continuous improvement in valuation processes, timelines, and reporting, by identifying potential efficiencies and areas of automation, recommending changes, and working with the Finance Operations team to implement changes
- Respond to information requests and inquiries from external auditors, ensuring that valuation documentation meets audit standards
- Maintain controls for private investment valuation processes, pro-actively identifying any deficiencies and recommending improvements
- Stay up to date on valuation best practices and make recommendations for changes to BCI’s valuation policies, directives, and procedures as applicable
