The Opportunity

The Director, Business Development and Financial Analysis, is responsible for directly advising business leaders in negotiating third party arrangements involving business valuations, financial modeling, financing and financial risk aspects related to alternative revenue generation activities. The Director will be instrumental in providing recommendations associated with business investments, fair value assessments, financial valuations and analysis as well as financial risk assessments. The role will examine and provide advice on how to manage financial risks through the life span of a business investment or affiliated relationship (e.g. as an entity transition from private to initial public offering) to ensure McMaster’s financial value is maximized.

Accountabilities

  • Develop and implement an oversight/governance framework for capital/financing requests.
  • Work in collaboration with all departments to complement resources in the various units.
  • Provide advice to leaders to support cross-functional collaboration to drive the successful execution of agreements and transactions that meet financial and risk objectives to support the strategic objective of diversifying McMaster’s revenue streams.
  • Bring together cross functional representatives (tax, legal, governance, finance, risk etc.) to review and assess capital/financing requests to support the progress of business plans for departments (e.g., MIP, Nuclear, Research Commercialization, Real Estate, Ancillaries and Partnerships) and any other subsidiaries/business that McMaster has invested capital or provided financing.
  • Oversee financial analysis and deal terms for third-party negotiations of new business development opportunities with counterparties and investors/banks to ensure that McMaster receives the best value and pricing.
  • Conduct financial analysis and financial/valuation modeling and provide analytical support to business owners to refine business cases.
  • Provide internal business valuation support and be an effective challenge to third-party valuations prepared by consultants (if needed) to ensure McMaster receives the best value and protects its financial interests.
  • Prepare and/or review third party or related party data rooms or data files for preparation of business valuation analysis, along with documented assumptions.
  • Prepare business cases and presentations, as needed, to support obtaining McMaster governance approval for new business investments and financing opportunities.
  • Assess business structures appropriate to the deal, e.g. limited liability partnerships, joint ventures, contractual service provider, minority equity investor versus debt lender, etc.
  • Provide analytical support such as financial/valuation modeling to the Treasurer and Chief Investment Officer as assigned.
  • Develop relationships with senior leaders and finance/legal teams as well as industry peers and service providers to deepen industry knowledge/best practices and to facilitate efficient and effective transaction execution
  • Ensure strong coordination between the various parties.
  • Manages, leads, and motivates teams of professionals.

Education & Experience

  • MBA, Undergraduate degree in Commerce, Business Administration or equivalent.
  • CPA, CBV – Chartered Business Evaluator or working towards
  • 10 Years of experience in a similar role
  • Relevant experience in a complex public or private sector environment. University, or similar non-profit environment experience, is an asset.

Salary Range $122,542.00 – $183,812.00 (annual)
